Introduction
Mil is the thickness of the film — one mil equals one-thousandth of an inch. For produce bags, the right mil is the difference between a bag that survives the field and one that splits before it reaches the packing shed.
Getting thickness wrong costs you either way:

What Determines the Right Thickness
Product weight
Heavier produce — carrots, potatoes, citrus — needs more mil than leafy greens or herbs.
Sharp edges
Stems, roots, and field debris puncture thin film. Step up a mil when contents are abrasive.
Handling
Field-filled bags take more abuse than bags filled on a conveyor. Harvest bags usually need extra strength.
Equipment
Wicketed and automated lines need consistent thickness for clean seals and reliable feeding.
Cold storage
Freezer and cooler use calls for resins and thickness that stay flexible at low temperatures.
Common Thickness Ranges for Produce
1–1.5 mil
Light retail produce bags — herbs, greens, and display bags where clarity matters most.
2–3 mil
General produce and wicket bags — the everyday workhorse for packing sheds and retail packs.
4–6 mil
Field harvest bags, heavier produce, and applications with sharp stems or rough handling.
6–8 mil
Heavy-duty harvest and bulk bags — maximum durability for demanding field conditions.
These are starting points, not rules — the right spec depends on your product and process.
Material Matters as Much as Thickness
