How Long Do Poly Bags Last in Storage?
Introduction
Polyethylene doesn't spoil like food, but film does age. Stored correctly, poly bags keep their strength and clarity for years; stored badly, they can yellow, stiffen, or weaken before you ever use them. Knowing what degrades film — and how to prevent it — protects both your inventory and your products.
Typical Shelf Life
Poly bags made from LDPE, LLDPE, or MDPE have no hard expiration date. In normal indoor storage, film typically performs as intended for several years. Most manufacturers and distributors consider two years a comfortable planning window, and film kept in cool, dark conditions often lasts well beyond that.
Two cases are different: film formulated with degradation additives for compostability, and film stored in harsh conditions. Both shorten usable life significantly.
What Shortens a Bag's Life
- •Ultraviolet light — direct sunlight breaks down polyethylene over time
- •Heat — hot warehouses accelerate aging and can weaken film
- •Ozone — electric motors and equipment generate it near stored film
- •Repeated handling — crushed or re-packed cartons damage film edges
UV exposure is the biggest culprit — which is why bags left on pallets outdoors or near dock doors age fastest.
How to Store Poly Bags
- •Store bags in their original cartons until use
- •Keep inventory away from windows and direct sunlight
- •Maintain a cool, dry storage area
- •Keep film away from equipment that generates heat or ozone
- •Rotate stock — use older cartons first
- •Avoid stacking heavy loads on top of bag cartons
Planning Your Orders
Because properly stored film lasts for years, it's safe to order quantities that cover a reasonable run — but avoid holding enormous buffer stock of a single custom print for years at a time. Artwork and product sizes change, and fresher stock is always better than decade-old film.
If you're ordering for seasonal peaks — harvest, holidays, summer ice — schedule deliveries so cartons arrive closer to when they'll be used.
