EVA vs LDPE Bags: Which Material Should You Choose?

Introduction

Most poly bags are made from LDPE or LLDPE, but some applications call for EVA — ethylene vinyl acetate blended into the film. EVA adds flexibility, clarity, and cold-temperature performance, at a higher price per pound. Knowing when the upgrade pays for itself keeps you from over-specifying — or under-specifying.

What EVA Adds to a Poly Bag

EVA is a copolymer blended with polyethylene resin to change how the film behaves. Even a small percentage noticeably changes the bag:

  • •Extra flexibility and a softer feel
  • •Excellent clarity and gloss for retail display
  • •Stays flexible in freezers and cold storage
  • •Stronger seals at lower thicknesses

These traits matter most where film has to stay soft and clear in demanding conditions — freezers, ice, and premium retail presentation.

Where Standard LDPE Still Wins

For most packaging, LDPE and LLDPE do the job at a lower cost:

  • •Cost-effective for high-volume runs
  • •Reliable, versatile all-purpose performance
  • •Good clarity for most applications
  • •Widely available in every bag style

If your bags live at room temperature and don't need exceptional clarity, standard polyethylene is usually the right call — and blends with LLDPE add puncture resistance where handling is rough.

Choose EVA When…

  • •Bags are stored or used in freezers or coolers
  • •The product is ice or requires visible product display
  • •Retail presentation benefits from extra gloss and clarity
  • •Seals need extra strength at a thin gauge

Stay with LDPE When…

  • •Bags are used at normal room temperature
  • •Volume is high and cost per bag matters most
  • •Standard clarity is acceptable
  • •The bag is a workhorse — liners, industrial parts, shipping
